| | No. 22 Tanabata Origami at Marlboro Free Library, Marlboro, NY

We presented Tanabata-Star festival and Origami at Marlboro Free Library as a part of their summer kids' program. This event was also the second of two Children's Day events which we collaborated with the DCAC Folk Arts Program.
20 plus children came to fold jumping frogs, write wishes on paper strips to hang on bamboo branches, and sample ""Amazake fermented rice drink"". In addition to the activities, we showed a display of advanced Origami pieces like dinosaurs, peacocks and more that came from Kyoto, Japan. This gave children a happy surprise.
Tanabata (the Star Festival) is held on July 7 every year in Japan. It is originated to a legend that the Cowherd Star (Altair) and Weaver Star (Vega), lovers separated by the Milky Way, are allowed to meet just once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month. Children and adults write their wishes on colored paper strips and hang them, along with other paper ornaments, on bamboo branches. | | マルボロ図書館にて七夕と折り紙

これは、マルボロ図書館児童部の夏休みプログラムの一環としてまたDCACと協賛で行った春の折り紙の第２回目とあわせての合同の企画として行われました。２０人以上の子供たちが訪れ、蛙を折り飛ばしあうゲームに熱中したり、七夕にちなんで短冊におのおのの願い事を書き連ね、笹の小枝につるしました。大枝の七夕飾りは図書館に置かれ、小枝は参加した子供たちが持ち帰りました。帰り際には、彼らには風変わりな甘酒（会員による手作り）も用意されさまざまな感想がでたようでした。
七夕はご存知のように日本古来から続いている慣習です。伝説によると彦星（または牽牛星）と織姫（または織女星）が天の川で別れ別れになっているが、年に一度の７月７日の夕方にだけ会うことが許されるといういわれです。子供も大人もこの日にちなんで短冊に願い事を書き色とりどりの紙飾りも添えて笹の枝につるし裏庭や玄関先に置きます。また七夕祭りも各地で催されます。 | |
