| | 05/03/14 Origami Workshop at Warwick Library in Orange County
Proudly to say, we were invited to join the library's month-long Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Celebration, and today we held Family Origami workshop. Luckily we got our newest and youngest volunteer, Mizuki-chan, and her parents, Ishida-san and Hiroko-san, joined us to replace the 3 volunteers couldn't make it. You can't imagine Mizuki-chan came from Japan only 2 months ago, and she's proved language isn't the only way to communicate as she fit right in along with her mom and dad and showed other kids how to create a dog and other object out of origami papers. At other tables, Onuma-san, Honda-san and Yamato-san were teaching guests to make airplanes and frogs. Some became very enthusiastic in making more challenging "cubes". We also noticed that the "crane" is another popular object many seemed found very interesting but difficult to make. I didn't realize until then that we, Japanese, start learning origami as early as in kindergarten and probably not so many knows it was one of our unique culture/art until you see other people found it not-so-easy thing to do unless you learned it. I also found it interesting that many mothers or older sisters seem to have less patience in waiting for younger ones to figure out how to fold the paper correct way. Instead, she started doing it herself and completely forgot about her kids. And, many has strong taste of her/his "color", and some were very very serious about it... as one little girl started crying just because her mom didn't give her a yellow one! I bet her room is painted all yellow...
Because there were kids after kids came to different tables trying different objects, we really didn't have time to watch the whole, but Kathleen, Assistant to Director of the library, later told us there were 40, probably a lot more, people came, and she was very impressed to see all kids were very focused and concentrating on learning origami. We didn't get to see the winner of the airplane or jumping frog competition as we had originally planned because guests came in all different time, and we didn't have chance to do it as all volunteers were tied up with teaching. Instead of excitement from challenging each other in a competition, however, we found peace and satisfied faces from different type of challenging the guests had enjoyed in Origami. It was a wonderful event, indeed.

Warwick Library Family Origami Workshop project leader | | このWarwickﾗｲﾌﾞﾗﾘｰでのファミリー折り紙ﾜｰｸｼｮｯﾌﾟは、同ﾗｲﾌﾞﾗﾘｰが企画している1ヶ月間に渡るAsian/Pacific Islander Heritage CelebrationｲﾍﾞﾝﾄのひとつとしてMHJCAに依頼が来たもので大変名誉なことだとして喜んで受けました。残念ながら3名のﾎﾞﾗﾝﾃｨｱが来れなくなりましたが、有難いことに新メンバーの石田さんファミリーが代わりに参加してくださることになりました。特にミズキちゃんはMHJCAの最新かつ最年少のﾎﾞﾗﾝﾃｨｱで、つい2ヶ月前に日本から来たばかりとは思えないほど自然に他の子供達の間に入ってお父さんの石田さんとお母さんのひろ子さんといっしょに犬とかの折り紙を教えてくれました。他のﾃｰﾌﾞﾙでは大沼さん、本多さんと大和さんが飛行機や跳びガエルを教えていましたがその中でも特に｢ｷｭｰﾌﾞ｣作りが人気がありました。それから｢折鶴｣も子供から大人まで随分興味を持ってﾄﾗｲしていましたが、どうやら結構難しかったようです。その時まで全く気付きませんでしたが、私達は日本では幼稚園頃の年齢から折り紙というのは教わってきていて、おそらく折り紙を折る(折れる)ということは当たり前の様に思っている人が多いのではないかと思いますが、実際他の国の人達が苦労しているのを見てあれは日本の独特な文芸であって、教わっていなかったら簡単ではないのだと初めて認識しました。私が興味深く思ったのは、参加者の中で小さい子達がなかなかうまく正しい折り方が分らないでいるのをじいっと辛抱強く見ていられないのが特にお母さん方とお姉さん達の中に多くて、そのうち我慢が出来なくなってつい代わりにやり始めたら夢中になり過ぎて子供のことをすっかり忘れてしまっていました。それから｢色｣に拘る人が沢山いました。それも超真剣なのがいて、中には黄色の折鶴をお母さんが渡してくれないので泣き始めた女の子がいました。間違いなく彼女の部屋は真黄色なのだと思います。
1時間半の間に次から次へと子供達がこっちのﾃｰﾌﾞﾙあっちのﾃｰﾌﾞﾙと移って回ってくるので、私達ﾎﾞﾗﾝﾃｨｱは全体を見る機会が全くありませんでしたが、後でﾗｲﾌﾞﾗﾘｰの担当者のｷｬｻﾘｰﾝさんがおそらく40人またはもっと沢山のゲストが来てくれたようだと教えてくれました。またどの子供達もすごく真剣になって折り紙に取り組んでいる姿を見て本当に関心したそうです。ゲストがﾊﾞﾗﾊﾞﾗに入って来ていた為に初めに計画していた飛行機と飛びガエルの競争は出来ませんでしたが、折り紙を折ることから生まれる落ち着きとそれから競争とは違うタイプのチャレンジからの満足感を参加者の皆さんが楽しんでくれたようです。大変良いイベントだったと思います。
担当者のｷｬｻﾘｰﾝさんとWarwickﾗｲﾌﾞﾗﾘｰにこの様なチャンスを頂けて本当に感謝いたします。ﾎﾞﾗﾝﾃｨｱの皆さん、また石田さんファミリーには協力して頂いて本当に有難うございました。ミズキちゃんにはMHJCAのﾎﾞﾗﾝﾃｨｱとしての初舞台の日だったとしていつまでもこの日のことを覚えておいてほしいと思います。有難う！
