| | This is our another regular cultural enrichment program - a school visit to the Mrs. Yurkovic's 3rd grade class at Holy Trinity School. This year, however, there are 30 students in her class, twice larger than the past. In order for us to accommodate 4 programs, as tradition, we made some changes including dividing the students into 3 groups. After a brief introduction about Japan, we had calligraphy group writing "Aki (fall)" while another making Origami cube and Kimono-wearing with the 3rd group. Then rotated the session with different groups three times.
< Origami > We weren't sure if cubes would be easy enough for the 3rd graders but we soon found that many seemed to like the challenge. Unfortunately the 30 minutes session was too short for most of them to complete the "construction" of the cube consisted of 6 pieces. But we could see many were eager to finish it, and we knew some definitely could figure out the way by themselves sooner or later. We had our new school visit program volunteer, Rosemarie, joined us for the Origami group today.
< Calligraphy > Thanks to Akiko-san, one of our calligraphy volunteers, who had made samples of the all 30 student's names in Katakana. It seems they really liked writing their names in foreign letters. We also had our new calligraphy volunteer, Keiko-san. Thank you and welcome to our volunteer team!
< Kimono-wearing > is another program all kids loved trying. Definitely girls preferred "pretty" ones while boys liked "tough looking" Hachimaki (head band). Onuma-san came from calligraphy desk and helped us as well. Who knew he has another skill besides making Amazake? Thank you, Onuma-san.
< Kamishibai Paper Theatre > was a story about an honest old man who made trees bloomed. It was supposed to be the last program for today's visit, but there was some time left so we added Q&A time. Typically I expected questions about cars (we actually received one) or food from the 3rd graders, but surprisingly there some questions about wars and military. They indeed know what's going on with real world, don't they?... Thanks to Rosemarie who helped me with some answers.
This was my second school visit this year and I again felt that the experience these kids had in our cultural program would remain in their memories, and I truly hope it may help them connect to Japan in some ways in the future. We have heard that their 2nd graders are looking forward to becoming the 3rd grade because of our program! That is the best compliment we could ask for. Thank you, Mrs. Yurkovic, for your such kind and open mind in a professional manner by giving us this wonderful opportunity to build a bridge with your students, and for a future. And thank you for your generous donation to MHJCA. I also thank to our volunteers who traveled in the early traffic hours to achieve our another mission. You all are truly wonderful people!

このHoly Trinity ｽｸｰﾙのYurkovic先生の小学校3年生のクラスを訪問するプログラムも今ではMHJCAの恒例となりました。しかし今年は生徒の数が今までの2倍の30名ということで、これまで提供してきた4つのプログラムを時間内で終わらせる為に生徒を3つのｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟにわけることにしました。ひとつのｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟが｢秋｣という字を習字で書いている間別のｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟは折り紙のｷｭｰﾌﾞ作り、3つ目のｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟは着物の着付けをしてそれを3回別のグループで繰り返すというものです。
折り紙：初めて3年生のクラスでトライしたので最初は少し難し過ぎるかもしれないと心配しましたが以外にも子供達はチャレンジが気に入ったようです。しかし30分というのはどうやら短かすぎたらしくほとんどの生徒が時間以内に6つのピースをｷｭｰﾌﾞに組み立てられなかったようです。ただし明らかに多数の子達は是が非でもやり遂げたい意思を見せていて間違いなくその内の何人かは早かれ遅かれ自分ひとりで仕上げるに違いないと見れました。今日は新しく学校訪問のﾎﾞﾗﾝﾃｨｱになったﾛｰｽﾞﾏﾘｰが参加してくれました。
習字：習字ﾎﾞﾗﾝﾃｨｱの一人の藤森さんが30人もの生徒全員の名前をカタカナでサンプルを用意して下さいました。ご苦労さまでした。どうやら子供達は自分の名前を外国語で書くことに気に入っていたようです。習字のﾎﾞﾗﾝﾃｨｱにけい子さんが新しく加わってくれました。これからもよろしくお願いします。
着物の着付け：これも子供達がとても楽しんだプログラムです。女の子達は間違いなく｢かわいらしい｣着物を着てみたい中男の子達は｢かっこいい｣ﾊﾁﾏｷが気に入ったようです。なんと大沼さんが習字デスクから駆けつけて手伝って下さいました。甘酒作り以外にそんな技能をお持ちだったんですね? 助かります！
紙芝居：今日は花咲か爺さんのお話です。本当はこれが今日の最後のプログラムになるはずでしたが時間が少し余ったので質問会を緊急に付け加えました。子供達からの質問はおそらく車(実際質問が出ました）とか食べ物だろうと予測していましたが、以外にも戦争とか軍隊に関する質問が出て子供達も現実今何が起こっているか知っているのだなと認識したものです。答えのヘルプをしてくれたﾛｰｽﾞﾏﾘｰに感謝です。
私にとっては今年2回目の学校訪問ですが、改めて子供達は私達が提供したプログラムで経験したことを覚えていてくれるだろうと感じました。その思い出が将来日本との結びつきに役立ってくれることを願うのみです。誰かが聞いたところによると2年生の生徒達は私達のプログラムがあるということで3年生になることを楽しみにしているのだそうでそれ以上嬉しい言葉はありません。ものすごく心の広いYurkovic先生にこの様に子供達とのつながりと将来への夢を持てるチャンスを頂けて本当に感謝致します。最後にﾎﾞﾗﾝﾃｨｱの皆さん、改めて任務を達成すべく朝早くラッシュｱﾜｰの中を出向いて下さって本当にご苦労さまでした。有難うございました。
