| | Because of a holiday the day after, some couldn't participate, but it was a good day to practice whatever we had learned before. Having Ishida-san's family including Mizuki-chan had brought us new breeze. It also gave me an opportunity to learn what the new generations are learning now in schools in Japan in terms of traditional calligraphy as I was very curious how they are preparing for a modern world in which people no longer need to write with a brush. After all, writing calligraphy may become a special skill not just for culture but for revival of a long-gone ancient art one day in the future. Having said that, we should be more serious about practicing and learning it...? Well, maybe not yet, as at least for now having participants find it fun or therapeutic as a meditation is my first priority.
Mizuki-chan wanted to practice her (first) name in Hiragana then Kanji. Since her name in Kanji is rather complicated, even for older Japanese who already know most Kanji, remembering the order of spelling of the Kanji is the most important part in practicing at first, not trying how to write artistically or beautifully, for a person who had never written the character before. Once remembered the spell, then artistic sense would come out naturally as each person has her own rhythm, space and balance. It'd be very exciting to see how she would one day master to write calligraphy after spending years outside Japan speaking English with her friends at school. Thinking about it made me, again, realized how important what we do as an organization in this community.
This was my last Calligraphy Workshop dedicated to the MHJCA members in 2014, and I enjoyed them all. Between my early 20's when I took last calligraphy lesson from my Sensei in Japan and the time I joined MHJCA I had no idea I'd actually use my skill from what I had learned from my 8 years of studying the traditional and Zenei (modern style) calligraphy from 2 great teachers. While there are so many skillful artists and professional calligraphers out there, I am very grateful being given this opportunity to help MHJCA. And, I'll be delighted to offer workshop again in 2015.

翌日が休日であることもあって数名が参加出来ませんでしたが良い練習日でした。今回は石田ファミリーの参加で新しい風が入ってﾘﾌﾚｯｼｭです。おかげで前から興味のあった最近の日本での教育の中に書道がどの様に繰り込まれているか知ることが出来ました。新世代の子供たちは筆で文章を書くということはもう必要としなくなった後、書道を習うということはちょっとした文化における技術というよりも、遠い将来はほとんど捨て去られた芸術の復活の為に必要とする特殊な技能となる日が来るかもしれません。ということは、もっと真剣になって勉強すべき...? とは思いますがまだその心配をする必要はないでしょう。今は取り合えず参加者の方々に習字というのは楽しいものまたは精神統一のひとつとして役に立つのだということを知ってもらえることが第一の目標です。
瑞貴ちゃんが名前を漢字で書くというチャレンジをしました。今まで一度も書いたことのない字を習字で書く時は、最初からきれいに書こうとか芸術的に書こうとするのではなくまず書き順を覚えることが大事です。そうすれば書いているうちに自分の持っている芸術感覚というものは自然に出てくるものです。さて学校でお友達と英語で会話をする生活を何年か続けた後瑞貴ちゃんが将来どの様に習字をマスターするのか見るのが楽しみです。それを考えると、私たちMHJCA日本人会が今コミュニティーでやっている活動の重要さを改めて認識したものです。
これで今年の習字ﾜｰｸｼｮｯﾌﾟは最後となりました。20代に最後の書道クラスを受けた後MHJCAに参加するまで2人の先生から伝統的な書道と前衛書道を習った8年の経験がまさかこの様に役に立つとは思ってもいませんでした。もっと腕の良いｱｰﾃｨｽﾄとか教授クラスの書道家とか沢山いる中私の技術はプロと呼べるレベルのものではないと思いますがMHJCAの役に立てて大変光栄です。ぜひまた来年もﾜｰｸｼｮｯﾌﾟのお手伝いをさせて頂ければと思っています。
