| | Millbrook is located about 15 miles east midtown Poughkeepsie. The school building is standing in the middle of somewhat very calm and tranquil atmosphere. There at Millbrook High School is a Japan Club with 9th to 11th grades students. Since they are already familiar with some of our cultures, we thought our mini-workshop program with Tea Ceremony, Flower Arrangement, Origami and Calligraphy would be perfect for them .
Origami and Calligraphy are already very popular and could be learned online or else easily. But we hoped students found having live instructors teaching one by one is something very warm and more enjoyable. Tea Ceremony is also well known however it requires special set up with utensils and there certainly need a well trained and experienced server to make it happen. So we brought mini-set for them to enjoy tea. The Flower Arrangement, on the other hand, is not as much well known while it is exclusively Japanese. You wouldn't need special kind of flowers nor vase or scissors, except Kenzan the round thing with spikes to hold the stems, to enjoy this unique Japanese culture. One may think it'd be easy to do it just by looking at someone's work or it'd look pretty anyhow because flowers are beautiful anyway. Yet it will take a special skill and distinguished artistic sense as well as long-term training to be able to teach others. Having the Flower Arrangement table with our (Ikenobo-style) instructor, Suzumi-san, was actually the "flower" of our today's mini-workshop as it certainly made the entire room brighter and more attractive. Seeing young students seriously putting flowers together to create beautiful lines, making tea in choreographed manner, trying to figure out how to fold a piece of paper and writing Japanese characters in Sumi-ink were something we would love to show photos to their parents and grandparents.
We sincerely thank to all those wonderful Japan Club students, Georgia-sensei and her daughter, Katarina-san, as well as Millbrook High School for letting us have this special day. MillbrookはPoughkeepsieから約15ﾏｲﾙ東に位置していて、Millbrook高校の校舎は大変静かで落ち着きのある地域にあります。そこに9学年から11学年の生徒が集まってできた日本クラブがあります。すでにある程度日本のことを知っているということもあって、ﾐﾆﾜｰｸｼｮｯﾌﾟが最適ではないかと思い茶道・華道・書道・折り紙のﾌﾟﾛｸﾞﾗﾑを提供しました。
折り紙と習字はもうすでに大変人気がありますからサイトとかいろいろな形で見れますが、ｲﾝｽﾄﾗｸﾀｰが実際一人ひとり教えてくれるというところに暖かさと楽しみがあることを生徒さんに知って頂けたらと思います。茶道も良く知られてはいますが、こちらは特殊な茶道具とｾｯﾄｱｯﾌﾟが必要となりますし十分経験のつんだｻｰﾊﾞｰがいないとできませんので、会からﾐﾆｾｯﾄを用意して生徒さんにお茶を楽しんで頂きました。一方華道というのはまさしく日本特有のものですが結構知られていません。剣山以外は特別なお花も花器、鋏がなくても楽しめます。中には他の作品を見ただけで簡単にできるとか元々花は美しいのでどのようにしてもきれいに見えるだろうと思う方もいらっしゃるかもしれません。しかし、華道というのは特殊な技能と個々独特の芸術感覚と長期の訓練をえてようやく人に教えられるレベルになれるのです。会の(池の坊)ｲﾝｽﾄﾗｸﾀｰのｽｽﾞﾐさんに加わって頂いてお花のﾃｰﾌﾞﾙを設けることによって部屋全体が明るく魅力的になったことで、まさに今回のﾐﾆﾜｰｸｼｮｯﾌﾟの｢華｣となりました。生徒さん達が一生懸命花をさして美しい線を出そうとしたり、格式ばったお手前でお茶を点てたり、どうやって一枚の紙をきれいに折れるか工夫している所や、墨で日本字を書いている姿を見てぜひご両親や祖父母に写真を見せてあげたいものだと感じました。
この特別な日を持たせて下さったMillbrook高校日本クラブのすばらしい生徒さん達、ｼﾞｮｰｼﾞｱ先生、お嬢さんのカタリナさんに心から感謝致します。ｼﾞｮｰｼﾞｱ先生から今後毎年のご招待を受けました。今日のﾌﾟﾛｸﾞﾗﾑの写真は同校のサイト(www.millbrookcsd.org) で見れます。それから我々の大事なﾎﾞﾗﾝﾃｨｱの皆さんにも心から感謝します。皆の協力がなかったら私達のﾌﾟﾛｸﾞﾗﾑを続けていくことは不可能です。本当に有難うございました。
