| | Murakami-san has been regular participant and kindly offered her Wappinger Falls residence for today's Tanka Summer Workshop. Originally it was planned to hold under the gorgeous wisteria trellis, but unfortunately we had to switch to inside due to the unfavorable weather.
Today's subject was - how to use an auxiliary verb "Li" at the end of sentence as a traditional Japanese written (literary) language, "Bungo", in Tanka. While you speak and write Japanese you may not have any problem in grammar, when Bungo is concerned you would have to remember there are complicated rules which is different from modern Japanese. It is very important to understand and become familiar with "Li" as it is frequently used in Tanka grammar. By adding some Bungo to a Tanka initially created verbally it could become classy and elegant, and thus your ability in Tanka composition would expand. We had 2 new participants joined us today as the first time who both composed impressive Tanka. It was truly an amazing workshop wholly enjoyed by the 13 participants.

夏の短歌ワークショップがワッピンジャー・ホールで開催されました。今回の開催場はレギュラー・メンバーである村上幸子さんの御好意で彼女宅となりました。事前に素敵に用意された藤棚の下で６月を満喫しつつのワークショップとなる予定でしたが、当日はあいにくの雨天。参加者は非常に残念がりながらも、家内での和気あいあいとしたワークショップを楽しみました。今回の課題は「文語における完了の助動詞“り”の使い方」を練習。日本語を話し、書く事が出来れば文法には問題がないのですが、文語となると日常語とは違い少し複雑な法則があります。特に短歌では良く使用される“り”の文法は自分なりにしっかり把握しておく事が重要です。口語で立った短歌にも文語を入れる事で、品格と優雅をかもし出すことが可能となり、短歌創作の範囲が広まります。今回はニュー・メンバーが２人も増え、初めての短歌とは思えない程すばらしい短歌を詠ってくださり、参加総勢１３名のうれしいワークショップでした。
