| | Writing Japanese letters in black Sumi ink - Calligraphy - sounds easy but the truth is it's not that simple. It could be boring if you do not know what purpose you are practicing for... In old time in Japan though not that old but when we were kids, probably until the time typewriter replaced handwriting, having a good writing in pen or brush was considered a respected talent. Having a beautiful handwriting was a plus when presented a report at school or work. There was a time Calligraphy class was mandatory in school. So, for who grew up in those times learning Calligraphy isn't just enjoying an art but it's a "training". Therefore, it is also a "challenge" constantly to improve writing skill. For who doesn't know anything about those times Calligraphy may be just one of Japanese art to have fun like painting. Or, for non-Japanese people it could be a very good method to practice Japanese language for communication purpose.
Those 5 members who attended today's workshop are very much regulars. That means, as I'm pleased to say, they must be enjoying studying Calligraphy whatever their purposes are. However, some couldn't help showing seriousness on their eyebrows when found their brushwork didn't come out as good as they wanted. Good thing is it's not as stressful as it sounds. Perhaps the combination of the color of ink (black), the smell of Sumi ink which is similar to coal (earth) and the brush with bamboo handle (nature) may be helping the person meditate while writing without knowing it.
In this modern world in which we found ourselves rarely write letters by hand, I truly hope more people would realize those handwritten notes are bringing your heart in each letters when delivered to the other. I think Calligraphy is the way to emphasize it artistically and spiritually. I certainly wish us to be able to continue spreading out our beautiful culture to many more people.

墨で字を書く(書道)というのは簡単そうに聞こえますが実際にはそうではないですね。もしなぜ習字を練習したいのか目的がはっきりしないでいるとすぐに飽きてきます。昔の日本では、と言ってもそんなに昔のことではなく私達が子供の頃、おそらくﾀｲﾌﾟﾗｲﾀｰが出てくる頃までではないかと思いますが、ﾍﾟﾝ書きまたは習字がうまいというのは結構尊敬されていました。学校または仕事場で美しい字でレポートを提出するとほめられたものです。以前は習字クラスが必ず授業としてあった時代もありました。その頃に育った人にとっては習字というのはおそらく単なる芸術を楽しむというよりも修行(書の道)であり、常に｢良い字｣が書ける様努力をすることかもしれません。一方で、その様な時代を知らない人にとっては画を描くのと同じ様にアートとして習字を楽しめると思います。あるいは日本人以外の方にとってはｺﾐｭﾆｹｰｼｮﾝをいうのを第一目的に日本語を勉強する方法にもなります。
今日参加された5名の方々はレギュラーです。ということは皆さん各自の理由がなんであれ楽しんで頂いているのだと思います。と言っても、中にはうまく希望通りに字が書けなくて真面目な顔で額にしわを寄せている人もいます。しかし実際は聞こえ程にはストレスではないようです。おそらく墨の色(黒)と臭い(地)、それから竹作りの筆(自然)で字を書くということが無意識のうちに書く人の心を安静にさせているのではないかと思います。
現代社会ではもう殆ど手紙を手で書くということをしなくなりました。手書きの字というのは書いた人の心を相手に強く伝えることが出来るというのを皆さんに気づいて頂きたいものです。書道はそれを芸術的にそれから心理的に強調したものではないでしょうか。これからも会としてもっと沢山の人にこの美しいｶﾙﾁｬｰを広めていけたらと望みます。
