| | 5/14/16 Multicultural Food Program “Stuffed!”
There many delicious rolled or stuffed Japanese food are out there, but we decided to present our infamous, Makizushi, at the free Multicultural Food Program at Poughkeepsie Adriance Library since some of our members well practiced at our last Sushi workshop at the same library. Besides us, there were 3 other ethnic groups brought stuffed food - Chinese Zongzi, Jiaozi & Baozi, Ukrainian Varenyky , Indian Pani Puri. While displaying beautiful Futomaki (thick-roll Makizushi), we demonstrated how to make hosomaki (thin-roll Makizushi) as well as offered hands-on experience. I personally expected to see some of the kids from the workshop but unfortunately didn’t see any. Nevertheless, there many people came. Some even tried to grab our Futomaki-display which I furiously protected from other fingers though couldn’t blame them as it was rather natural behavior to want bigger and more colorful delicious-looking food.
Thanks to our Sushi-chef volunteers who, as always, offer us their endless help. And, we’d like to thank to the Executive Director at Arts Mid-Hudson, Mrs. Linda Marston-Reid, for her making sure we all got enough supplies and the event would be done successfully. Food bring friends and smiles. We truly enjoyed other yummy food and certainly confirmed, more strongly after this program, that food could be an excellent tool to bring peace among different nationality people.
This event was our member as well as the AMH’s Folk Art Program Director, Polly-san’s, last work before her departure for West Coast. She had organized and coordinated countless collaboration programs for MHJCA in so many years. She had done us so much more by making sure our name were well known in the community so that we could continue our activities. We will certainly miss her and wish her the best luck in her new job and life in CA. My only regret is, however, she didn’t get a chance to improve her Ikebana flower arrangement skill after her first and last try… Maybe she would find another Japanese group there and continue her interest. 世の中いたる所に美味しい巻き物又は詰め物の日本食がありますが、以前同じライブラリーで寿司ワークショップをやった時に何名かのメンバーが練習したこともあって、プキプシーのAdrianceライプラリーでの同プログラムではMHJCAからはいつもの巻き寿司を出すことにしました。我々の他に3つのグループの詰め物の民族フード(中国のZongzi, Jiaozi とBaozi, ユクレーニアのVarenykyとインドのPani Puri)が試食用に出されている中、MHJCAでは奇麗な太巻きを飾りにしながら細巻きの作り方を見せたりゲストにもチャレンジしてもらいました。前回のワークショップに参加した子供達の何名かが来るかもと予測していましたが残念ながらみかけませんでしたが、沢山の人が試食に来ました。中にはディスプレー用の太巻きをつまもうとした人もいて私は必至になって他の手から守っていましたが、無意識に大きくて色とりどりの美味しそうな食べ物の方につい手が出るのも無理はないとは思いました。
いつも無限なるヘルプを提供して頂けるボランティアメンバーの寿司シェフの方々有難うございました。またArts Mid-Hudson のExecutiveディレクターのリンダ・マーストン-レイドさんにはしっかり備品等が行き届いているとかイベントが間違いなく成功するよう確認して頂いたことを心から感謝致します。フードがあるところには友と福をもたらすと聞きますが、私達はしっかり美味しい他の民族フードを楽しませて頂いて、間違いなく食べ物というのは多民族の間に和をつくるすばらしい方法であることを再確認しました。
このイベントが私達のメンバーでAMHのフォークアートプログラムディレクターだったポーリーさんが西海岸に発つ前の最後の仕事となりました。何年にも渡って数々の共同プログラムをMHJCAの為に企画して下さっただけでなく、我々が末永くカルチャープログラムを続けていけるように地域の人達にMHJCAの名前が十分知れ渡る様多大な努力をして頂きました。ポーリーさんがいなくなってしまうのは本当に寂しいことですが、西海岸での新しい仕事と新生活の成功を心から祈りたいと思います。ひとつだけ残念なのは、最初で最後だった生け花の腕をみがいてもらうチャンスがなかったことです。願わくばサンフランシスコでも日本人会をみつけてぜひ改めて続けてほしいものです。頑張って！有難うポーリーさん。
