One who has no idea about Kitsuke may wonder why learning how to wear Kimono is so important for Japanese, women particular. Why it takes so much time and practice while it seems just putting them on and tie a thick belt. But if you ever try to wear one by yourself you’d know how much work it’d be, after hours of sweating and out of breath followed by frustration and disappointment. Many times you may experience embarrassment if you’ve ever attended at a public event wearing Kimono from your unsuccessful Kitsuke, when your Obi-belt may become loosen and, the worst case scenario, it’d fall and be dragging like your tail… So, it’s not that easy, definitely not so simple as you think. But when you see one wearing Kimono perfect in style and elegance, you’d understand that is truly the “Art of Sophistication” one would love to achieve to the highest level.
We have done Kitsuke workshop twice last year. Sadly, however, none of the previous participants has mastered or improved the technique. The truth is, regretfully to say we all forgot what we were taught… So, here we are again at another workshop, with freshly cleared brain, to challenge the same thing – to learn how to wear Kimono. Most importantly “beautifully”. Today, we started with Yukata, light and casual Kimono for summer (the direct translation is bathrobe), which is much easier than the other. But, if we ever tried, the list of Kitsuke check point could be as long as several pages.
We’d know the result of today’s lesson probably at the next occasion when we’d have a chance to wear Yukata or Kimono, hopefully some of us would be accomplished after all. Thanks to our instructor, Chikako-san, for her patience and to Yuriko-san for her assistance to make today’s workshop more interesting and enjoyable.

「着付け」というコンセプトを知らない人はおそらくなぜ日本人の特に女性にとってわざわざ着物の着方を習うということが重要なことなのか不思議に思うことでしょう。どう見ても単に着物をはおってちょっと太いベルト(帯)を結ぶだけのことなのに、時間は掛かるし何度も練習を重ねないといけないし…。しかし一度でも自分で着物を着てみようとされた方は、何時間もの間汗ダクダク、息苦しいの、うまく結べないのでイライラ、ガッカリの苦労の後その難しさが分かるはずです。最悪の場合は、適切な着付けをしないで公の場に出て帯が緩むだけではなくて完全に落っこちてしっぽのようにズルズルと引きづってさんざん恥ずかしい目に遭うとか...。というわけで想像するほど着付けというのは決して簡単ではないのです。しかし着物をスタイリッシュでエレガントに着ている方を見たら、あれは正しく誰もが成就したい「完璧な美の芸術」ではないかと気づかれることでしょう。
さて会では昨年2度ワークショップをやりましたが、残念ながら参加者のうち一人も上達または完璧に着付けが出来るようになった人はいなかったようです。要するに恥ずかしながら皆習ったことを全部忘れてしまったというのが事実です。というわけで、また今日皆さん頭をすっきりさせて改めて同じことの挑戦です - 着付けを習うというだけでなく、特に「奇麗に」着物が着れるようになる、です。今日は着物より簡単な浴衣から練習を始めました。しかしもし着付けのチェックリストを作成した場合はおそらく何ページにもなると思います。
今日の成果は願わくば次回何等かの機会に浴衣か着物を着る機会があったら上達したかどうかわかると思います。辛抱強くあきらめないで教えて下さった千佳子さんと、アシスタントを快く受けて下さった由利子さんに感謝します。お蔭様で興味深くて楽しいワークショップになりました。
