| | If you are an instructor or teacher, of course you’d love to see your class
with full of enthusiastic students with twinkling eyes. But when you weren’
t expected, you’d become a little panicked. So, that was my first reaction
when I found out there will be 13 members attending at the Workshop No. 3 at
Galleria community room today. So, I secretly called my great backup,
Asai-san the professional. Thanks to her who gave me ok without hesitation!
Today, we had our newest members, Margarita-san and her two children,
Lily-chan and Emilio-kun. While I was focusing on them and the other member
and their friend, Mayumi-san, Asai-san was helping the rest of the
participants, and I liked very much the way it worked. Because Lily-chan was
studying Japanese, I thought she looked more relaxed when writing characters
than average non-Japanese who had never tried calligraphy before.
Margarita-san is a teacher and I noticed that the way she analyzes the
calligraphy seems different from others, especially artist such as painters,
who commonly show interest in calligraphy. I was more surprised to see
Emilio-kun whom I was told wasn’t so much curious about calligraphy ended
up with showing some talent in creating characteristic forms. I hope they
would come back to the next workshop to discover something more challenging.
The next calligraphy workshop will be the “Kakizome” at Arts Mid-Hudson in
Poughkeepsie on 1/7/17. I look forward to seeing you all, as volunteers or
participants, at the First Writing of the Year 2017!

Calligraphy Instructor | | 教える立場になるとやはり目をキラキラ輝かせた生徒さんで教室がいっぱいになると
嬉しいものです。しかしもし予測していなかったらついパニックに陥ってしまうかも
しれません。実は今日のワークショップに13人が参加すると知ってちょっとあわてて
しまったのが事実です。そこでこっそり私のバックアップに浅井さんに助けを頼みま
した。ためらいもなくすぐにOKして頂いたので本当にラッキーでした。
今日のワークショップには一番最近メンバーになったマーガリタさんと二人の子供さ
ん、リリーちゃんとエミリオ君が加わりました。私がその3人とメンバーであり彼女
たちの知り合いでもある真由美さんを見ている間浅井さんが他の参加者の方々を見て
下さいました。私はそのやり方が大変良かったと思っています。リリーちゃんは日本
語を勉強しているからか、普通の日本人以外の方で今まで習字をやったことのない人
に比べると大変リラックスして書いている様に見えました。普通特に習字に興味を見
せるのが絵描きとかのアーティストに多い様ですが、マーガリタさんは先生をしてい
るからか書道に対する見方が違う様なのが印象的でした。一番驚いたのが元々あまり
習字に興味があったわけではないけれどと聞いていたエミリオ君が随分個性的な線を
書いていたことです。ぜひまた次回のワークショップに参加して何か別のチャレンジ
をしてほしいものです。次の習字ワークショップは1月7日にArts Mid-Hudsonである
2017年度の「書初め」です。ぜひ皆さんにはボランティアまたは参加者としておいで
下さい。
