| | You would never imagine someone would send a bomb threat at this beautiful
Marist College, but it did happen last year on the very day we were supposed
to provide our annual Tea Ceremony Demo there. We almost knew it was just a
threat but didn’t want to ignore the possibility either, so we had
cancelled our event then. So, it was nice to be back again and witness the
campus was as peaceful as we had left two years ago. It was also good to
know they never lacked with students who were interested in Asian culture,
and so there it was the Asian Alliance Club with many enthusiastic students
lead by Wendy (Si Ya) Ni who was their Vice President this year.
In the past we provided Tea Ceremony mainly demonstration till 2 years ago
when we had the students to experience making tea sitting on the Himousen (a
red blanket) because there was only a few participated due to the weather at
that time. Since we realized they truly loved it, we again tried a workshop
following a demo, only this time having added 4 more instructors at the
table set-up to help nearly 40 students how to “make your own tea”.
I hope that their enthusiasm had increased after this rare opportunity they
experienced, and that would lead to a peaceful relationship with whomever
they may have in the future, in business or personal life. After all, these
students may be the ones leading our community or, who knows, country one
day… Peace is the first thing in our mind as the very basic rule when
dealing with overseas countries. While this is far from politics, I simply
hope that the spiritual philosophy they may have learned from today’s tea
demo and workshop would stay deep in their mind - it is “Peace”.

Project Leader | | この美しいマリストカレッジで誰かが爆弾騒ぎを起こすとは想像も出来ませんが実は
去年茶道デモをする予定の日にそれが起こりました。おそらく脅しだけだろうと想像
はしていましたが、念の為ということもあって結局キャンセルしました。なので、ま
た今年改めて訪れて以前と同じく平和な環境であることを確認して安心したもので
す。それから、相変わらずアジア文化に興味のある生徒が沢山いて、バイスプレジデ
ントのウェンディ―(Si Ya)NiさんがリードするAsian Alliance クラブがあるので
す。
以前は茶道のデモを主に提供していましたが、2年前に天候のせいか参加者が大変少
なかったこともあり生徒さんに緋毛氈の上でお茶の点て方を経験して頂いたことがあ
ります。その時大変喜ばれたのでまたデモだけでなくワークショップの形でやること
にしました。ただし今回は40名近くもの参加者をこなす為に4名インストラクターを
追加してテーブル式でもやってみました。
このめったにない経験のあと生徒さんの興味が益々広がったことを望みます。またそ
れが将来仕事又は私生活の中で出会う人達との和につながってくれればと願うばかり
です。考えてみればあの生徒さん達が将来このコミュニティーの指導者に、あるいは
もしかしたらこの国を指導していく一人になることだってあるかもしれません。他国
と交流する際の一番最初のルールは平和ではないかと思います。政治とは全くかけ離
れた世界ではありますが、今日の茶道デモとワークショップから学んだ精神的な教え
をいつまでも忘れないでいてほしいと願います。その一つが「和」です。
