| | Our good old Holy Trinity school's 3rd grade class is back again lead by new teacher, Ms. Jodi Adam, after Mrs. Yurkovic was retired last year. Since our 4 programs, including Origami, Calligraphy, Kimono wearing and Kamishibai paper theatre, were always very popular before and they were perfect for the 3rd grades, we decided to continue. For Calligraphy desk, we had kid's names in Katakana prepared by Akiko-san to go with Spring in either Kanji or Hiragana. For Origami, there was a time in the past we had students challenged to make a Cube but we sensed it may have been a little too hard for the 3rd grade kids, at least for some of them. So we brought the popular jumping frog game back to the class. We got extra volunteers this time for Kimono wearing, hoping it'd allow us to put Kimono and Obi on kids more carefully so they wouldn't fall down during photo. We brought a pretty Kimono for Jodi-sensei for her first try. She did look very nice indeed. While kids were waiting for the next program, Rosemarie was telling them about Japan and I'm sure they would remember the special moment for a long time. Kids accept without question that Rosemarie who certainly doesn't look like a Japanese and speaks perfect English is one of our representatives, and I think that is very important part of our program it is simply a natural thing that anyone could love Japanese culture and adopt them in your life. Because we were told we'd have to let kids leave on time, we rushed from the beginning. As a result, there was almost a half an hour left before leaving time after I finished reading Hanasaka Jii-san the Kamishibai, so we had added Q&A time. Obviously, they studied about Japan beforehand as some asked us about Basho the poet. That certainly challenged our (my) intelligence and academic level& Thanks to my staff, as I confirmed they must have done well at school, who helped me with the appropriate answers. Who knew 3rd grade kids would ask us about Basho&? It reminded me that we should prepare for some intelligent questions at the next visit.
12 days after our visit, I received email from Jodi-sensei in which she informed me kids are still talking about their experience of that day. That means, I trust that we have created another bridge, an invisible but very strong and invincible bridge in their heart. That's what we do. To our very reliable and trusty volunteers who again showed great teamwork I thank you all for your excellent job. With our teamwork, we can do a lot more good things to the community, especially to kids, in the future.

Project Leader | | 2月29日 Holy Trinity 学校訪問：カルチャープログラム
昨年ヤーコビック先生が退職された後新任のジョディ・アダム先生の引率によるホーリートリニティー小学校の3学年の訪問がまたまた戻ってきました。以前から同学校に提供していた折り紙・習字・着物着付けと紙芝居の４つのプログラムはいつも好評だったことと3学年に適していると思われるので改めて続けることにしました。習字はいつもの如く章子さんが用意して下さったサンプルを見ながら生徒達が自分の名前を入れて「春」という字を漢字またはひらがなで書きました。折り紙は以前一度キューブに挑戦してもらったことがありましたが、中にはちょっと難しすぎた子もいた様なので人気のある飛びガエルに戻しました。着物の着付けは写真撮影の間に着物と帯がくずれないように気を付けて着付けが出来るようにボランティアの人数を増やしました。ジョディ先生には初めてのトライで奇麗な着物を用意しましたが良く似合っていたと思います。次のプログラムを待っている生徒達にローズマリーが日本に関する話をしてくれていましたがあの特別な時をいつまでも覚えてくれると思います。子供達は何の疑問も持たないで間違いなく日本人には見えなくて英語を流暢に話すローズマリーがこの会の代表者の一人であるということを自然に受け止めています。これは日本人でなくても日本文化を理解して人生の一部に取り入れることは全く自然なことだということに気づいてもらう意味でも私達のプログラムの大切な点だと信じます。生徒達を時間内で帰宅させないといけないということだったので最初から急いでプログラムを進めましたが、結果的には「花咲か爺さん」の紙芝居が終わった後30分位時間があまったので質問の時間を加えました。どうやら生徒達は前もって日本文化の勉強をしていたようで「芭蕉」に関する質問が出ました。私達（特に私）の学問レベルと知識に挑戦するような予測もしなかった質問だったのでちょっと度肝を抜かれましたが、間違いなくしっかり真面目に勉強をしたと思われる他のスタッフに救われました。3学年の生徒が芭蕉に興味があるとは… 次回はもっと知識を豊富にしておかないといけないといけないですね。
学校訪問をした12日後になってジョディ先生からEmailが届き、今もって子供達があの日の楽しかった経験のことを話しているそうです。ということはまたもうひとつの橋、目に見えないけれど子供達の心の中に頑丈で壊れない橋が出来たと信じます。それが私達の元々の目標でもあります。信頼できて‘便りになるボランティアのスタッフによるティームワークのおかげです。コミュニティーに将来もっともっと何か良いことが出来ると信じます。
