| | The festival is becoming bigger and bigger by adding more performers. So, besides our popular Origami table, we decided to bring “Bon-odori” folk dance this year.
Bon-odori is seen at many summer festivals in Japan when men and women wearing summer Yukata-kimono or Happi jacket dancing along with Bon-odori songs which varies per regions while some standard ones may be played as well. Many of us Japanese have some experience when we were young but we needed to refresh our memories of dance forms.
We had some non-Japanese and non-member friends volunteered, so they also practiced before today. We picked one song with the easiest and least forms so that we could remember within a limited time and perform without making mistakes.
During performance, we had our staff invite people from audience to join the dance as we thought it’d be an excellent idea. Unfortunately, though, because the weather forecast expected rain today, the venue changed last minute from T.R. Gallo Park to the Andy Murphy Midtown Center, so there weren’t many audience when we started. Nevertheless, it was great fun. We’re already planning to have a little more complicated forms and more colorful piece next year, so our volunteers can enjoy it as much as the audience. It’s a festival, for everyone, after all.
We’d like to thank to the Reher Center for Immigrant Culture and History and Arts Mid-Hudson for having us again at this wonderful event. And, to our volunteer members and friends, I thank you all very much for making this event even better.

Team leader | | このフェスティバルはパーフォーマーがどんどん増えて大きくなってきました。そこで我々もいつも人気のある折り紙テーブルに加えて今年は盆踊りをすることにしました。
日本ではいたる所で盆踊りを含む夏祭りがあって、浴衣とか半被を着た男女が祭
りの曲にのって踊っているのが見られます。地方によっては曲が違う様ですが一般的な曲もあります。私達日本人の中には結構若い頃に踊った経験のある者もいますが振り付けは忘れてしまっているので練習が必要です。
日本人以外のボランティアとメンバーの友人達も参加してくれることになったので同じ様に練習をしました。時間があまりなかった為、曲は間違いをしない様短くて覚えやすい振り付けも一番簡単なものを選んでみました。
曲が始まるとスタッフが観客を呼んで踊りに参加してもらいました。大変良いアイデアだと私達は思いましたが、天気予報によると雨が予測されたので直前になって会場がT.R. Gallo公園からAndy Murphy Midtownセンターに変更になった為か観客の人数が大変少なかったのが残念でした。それにも拘わらず大変面白い経験でした。すでに来年はもう少し難しくて華やかな踊りを選んで観客だけでなく私達のボランティアも楽しめる様にしたいと考えています。要するにこれはお祭りですから、ぜひ皆で楽しみたいものです。
Reher Center for Immigrant Culture and HistoryそれからArts Mid-Hudsonに改めてこのすばらしいフェスティバルに参加させて頂いたことを感謝致します。それから、益々楽しいイベントになる様にボランティアの協力をして頂いたメンバーと友人の方々、有難うございました。
