| | Today’s workshop’s participants were included with 2 new members who expressed their excitement in writing calligraphy after so many years. Although we write same characters when using pens, pen-writing requires different kind of skill as it is used in daily life. While Calligraphy may be considered an art/hobby in modern days, as I may have mentioned before, in old days good hand-writing was considered not only sophistication but also high education as well as intelligence. Since we no longer need to present our handwriting in order to prove good educational background or skill, it is sad to see more and more Japanese seem lack in good writing technique. It is, however, scientifically recognized that when you handwrite frequently, you would most likely remain sharp in memories thus may even avoid developing dementia. Well, that is for pen-writing, and I’m not sure if these theories would apply to Calligraphy writing. But anyways, “Writing” for Japanese is very meaningful thus much important. So, doesn’t matter if it’s a part of art or education or hobby, we would like to continue Calligraphy workshop as long as we see participants happy, and hopefully we’ll have more non-Japanese members to share the importance of Writing.

Calligraphy Instructor | | 今日のワークショップには長年ぶりの習字を大変楽しみにして下さった新メンバーのお二人が参加して下さいました。
実際には同じ字を書いてはいるんですが、習字とペン字で「書く」ことにおいては違いがあります。現代では習字＝書道はどちらかと言うとアート又は趣味の類と考慮されるかもしれませんが、ペン字は日常生活で使われる為違う技術が必要です。以前にも説明したかもしれませんが、昔は「良い字が書ける」ということは洗練されているというだけでなく高度な教育を受けている又理知的であると見なされていました。高度な教育レベル又は技術を証明する為に手書きの字を見せる必要がなくなった現代では残念ながら「綺麗な字」の書ける日本人がどんどん少なくなってきている傾向にあることは大変残念なことだと思います。しかし、常に手で字を書いていると記憶力が衰えにくい、それから痴呆になりにくいとも言われています。ただしそれはあくまでもペン字のことであって、その説が必ずしも書道に適応されるかどうかは分かりません。どちらにしても「書くこと」というのは日本人にとっては十分な意味を持つことであって従って大変重要なことでもあります。ですからアートであろうが、教育であろうが、又は単なる趣味としてであろうが参加者に喜んで頂ける限りこの習字ワークショップは続けていきたいと思いますし、願わくばもっと日本人以外のメンバーにも「書くこと」の重要さを私達と分かち合って頂きたいものです。
