| | It’s the Year of Boar out of 12 animal signs of Japanese zodiac. As Japanese characterize people by the year born, typically the Boar represent one who tends to dash straight forward toward goal without hesitation or stopping. Aggressive and/or brave rather than timid and/or careful. You’d recognize someone just like that. Then Chinese call it a Year of Pig. When you talk about the differences in character of the two, while they are in the same family thus they share similar behavior, you know pigs are not known as a kind of animal who would dash like a boar. My guess is that when the zodiac calendar was introduced to Japanese, they probably couldn’t think of anything that much significant in the pig’s character so it was replaced by boar. That is my guess which is not proven anyhow. By now, you may realize Japanese in old times enjoyed playing with characterizing things pretty much everything.
Letters were also well played in old days in Japan. Writing shows each writer’s character just like driving a car. Kakizome is not the day you’d practice writing but the very day you’d show your best and characteristic writing filled with your skill and strength, presenting that you’re ready to face the New Year bravely. It is, however, very difficult for the participants to do that since they didn’t have a chance to practice prior to this Kakizome day. I am hoping that, if we could keep doing Kakizome for many more years, we’d eventually be able to focus more on each participant’s “character” in writing.
I’m pleased to say today’s Kakizome was another success. Thank you everyone whom volunteered today.

Project Leader | | 今年の干支はイノシシです。日本人は生まれた年に当たる干支の動物を参考に人のキャラクターを見ます。一般的に言うとイノシシ年は「ゴールに向かってためらいなく横道にそれたりしないで一直線に猛突進する」性格だと言われます。それは控えめとか慎重深いよりもどちらかと言うと強気で勇敢だとも取れます。おそらく皆さんどなたかそれらしき人を知っていらっしゃると思います。ところが中国人はこれを豚の年と呼んでいます。両動物を比較してみると確かに同じ豚族ですから似通ったところが沢山ある一方で豚はイノシシの様に猛突進する類の動物だとは知られていないので、私の想像では恐らく干支が日本に紹介された際日本人はあまり独特な特徴のない豚に代わってイノシシを干支に使ったのではないかと思います。もちろん私の考えを証明するものは何もありませんが… 兎に角、昔の日本人はいろいろな物において特徴をうまく描写したり記述することを楽しんだということに気づかれていることと思います。
文字そのものにおいても古代の日本人はいろいろ工夫して楽しんだ様です。文字は車の運転と同じ様に人を表します。「書初め」は練習をする日ではなく各人の個性を生かしたベストな技術と力を持って「新年に立ち向かう勇敢な態度で」字を書きあげる日ですが、日ごろ練習するチャンスのない参加者の方々にはちょっと無理な話ではあります。将来この書初めを何年も続けていけるのであれば、願わくば各人の個性の出せる字が書ける様に指導できればと思います。
今回の書初めも成功に終わりましたこと、ボランティアをして頂いた皆さんに感謝致します。有難うございました。
