Cultural Program at Kingston YMCA “Camp Starfish”

7/13/16 (Wed) Cultural Program at Kingston YMCA “Camp Starfish”
When first time brought our cultural program to the YMCA last year, we suspected it was not just kids but also their staff didn’t know what to expect. Then we also knew at the end of the program that they liked what they experienced since there weren’t any other organization doing home visit with variety of cultural programs like MHJCA. Yes, we are very proud of what we do. So here we are, back again at the YMCA, witnessing local kids enjoying Calligraphy, Origami and Kimono wearing. From our last experience, as it is easy to imagine by the name of the camp “Starfish”, we knew kids would be soaking wet from water game earlier the day, so I particularly requested the director to make sure they’d be dried before our program. Thankfully, they were all dried enough however the rest of us were all sweating due to the hot & humid temperature. Nevertheless, the program went well. Thanks to our regular volunteers as well as the 4 non-member volunteers Keiko-san called in who had helped us last year, too. It was also nice to see Maddie-san who was the last year’s instructor and came to visit us and our program.

At the end, those wild kids had learned something new and alien. It may not be so significant to them at that time, but we know one day in the future when some of them see a calligraphy writing at a museum or a woman in Kimono on TV they may realize they have experienced a part of it. And that would become meaningful to them, and that would be very important for us as well.
