Successful Aging seminar

Dutchess County Office for the Aging (OFA) (www.dutchessny.gov/aging) is actively helping in multiple areas for people 60 years of age and over. OFA services include senior housing, exercise programs, nutrition education, senior friendship centers, NY Connects, scam prevention, home improvement ideas, and additional resources that can be seen in the photos.

The seminar’s host, Mr. Brian Jones, has utilized his role as a radio news host to increase awareness on how seniors can increase their healthspan by making healthier decisions. Healthspan refers to the ability to live independently with good physical and mental health conditions.

According to a UN report in mid-2017, the world’s population numbered at nearly 7.6 billion. It was estimated that 962 million people are 60 years of age and older, comprising of 13% of the global population. The 60+ demographic is growing at a rate of about 3% per year.

On April 10, 2018, the Guinness World Records officially awarded a Japanese man the title of oldest living male. On that date, he was 112 years and 259 days old. A Japanese woman is the oldest female living at 117 years of age. In May of 2017, Japan had the highest average life expectancy rate. On the other hand, Japan’s potential support ratio (PSR*) is 2.1, which is the lowest in the world.
(*) The Potential Support Ratio (PSR) is the ratio between the population in working-age group 15-64 years and the non-working population 65 years or older

There are simply things one can do today to start to increase their healthspan such as positive thinking, laughing, having a balanced diet, living an active lifestyle, and starting a gratitude journal.
