Event Description

6/6, 20 & 7/18 MIZUYA Workshop

On June 6, 20 and July 18, we held our 3 sessions of five continuous months “mizuya” workshop which is aimed to become a capable mizuya volunteer and “Bonryaku” style tea ceremony presenter to our future Japanese tea ceremony events. It is one of important subjects for MHJCA to increase capable and available volunteer members.. The workshop has been hosted at a member’s home in Cold Spring with total of four devoted members.

The workshop is to gain important skills of "mizuya", the behind-the-scenes preparation and support before and during tea ceremony. This workshop is a continuation from the previous 2 workshops that were held In February except with in-depth personal instructions.

We practiced followings thoroughly.

• Folding chakin (linen cloth)
• Strain matcha tea powder
• Dispense strained matcha powder to natsume (tea caddy)
• Set up chawan (bowl)
• Guest etiquette
• Hanto’s work/responsibility
• Fukusa Sabaki (fukusa folding)
• Freshen chashaku (bamboo tea scoop)
• Freshen natsume
• Wiping chawan with chakin
• Handling natsume and chashaku

The homeowner has been kindly making homemade Japanese sweets for us to enjoy it with a bowl of “usucha” tea at the end of workshop.

This workshop will continue until end of October.
