Tanka Workshop #3

Tanka Workshop/Autumn '22

On November 20th, we held our final Tanka Workshop of 2022 at the Community Room of Poughkeepsie. Although the pandemic is easing this year, I was still happy to see that everyone was healthy and able to participate.

Members were given freedom to compose their poems around any topic. However, some said that it was easier to write when presented with a theme, so we will try that approach next time. It has been 12 years since the Tanka Workshop began, and I think members have been able to immerse themselves in the strengths and difficulties of the Japanese language.

Using skillful metaphors and similes to express the subtle emotions unique to Japanese people is a technique that would be difficult in many other languages. The variety, visual perception, and beauty of sound in the Japanese language are what make this possible.

I hope that in the coming year, we will continue to enjoy how those expressions are condensed into 31 characters and transform into the lively flow of tanka!
