Ikebana Workshop

Our second Ikebana summer workshop took place on Sunday, June 26 in the Poughkeepsie Galleria Community Room. We welcomed 6 participants, in addition to Taeko Yanagida as the lead instructor and Suzumi Adams as the supporting instructor.

This workshop was divided into two parts: the first half focused on Shoka and the second half on freestyle.

Shoka is a three-branched asymmetrical style that looks simple. It turns out, however, that selecting and arranging the branches actually takes quite a bit of thought and consideration. To help us, Taeko-san generously prepared printouts and individual bundles of pre-selected branches and flowers for us, which made it much easier to put this arrangement together.

For our freestyle arrangements, we used our own materials, supplemented by Suzumi-san’s lovely selection of greenery that she brought from her garden. The combination of everyone’s different choices of flowers and vases, along with individual creativity, resulted in a beautiful variety of arrangements.

Taeko-san offered one-on-one feedback for each round, showing the subtle changes and improvements that could be made to each arrangement, while Suzumi-san kindly encouraged us as we worked.

A big thank you to both of our instructors for another wonderful workshop, as well as for providing so many materials for us to use, including the worksheets, flowers, greenery, and a backdrop for taking photos (brought in by Suzumi-san).

We will be taking a break in July and resume this Ikebana series in August.

Happy summer!
