Kakizome
01/07/23 “Kakizome”: The First Writing of the Year at Arts Mid-Hudson
For the first time since January 2020, we were finally able to open our popular Kakizome workshop at Arts Mid-Hudson in Poughkeepsie this year! We had two sessions between 1:30pm and 4pm with a limit of 20 people per session due to COVID. Compared to the chaos we used to experience when we allowed walk-ins and had to add more tables and chairs because it got so crowded, this time was very relaxed, though we found it too quiet for a Shogatsu (New Year) celebration mood.
We had 20 guests in the first group but about half of the people who made a reservation for the 2nd group didn’t show up. That was a little bit of a disappointment but it turned out to be a great chance for the group to receive plenty of attention from our 4 instructors. As always, we encouraged the participants to write their own New Year’s resolutions. Some came up with ones that made it tough for us to think about which Kanji characters would be the perfect translation. But that was all part of the fun.
We’d like to thank Elinor Levy, the Folk Arts Programs Manager, and Arts Mid-Hudson for having us come back for this very important event. And we’d also like to thank our volunteers whose dedication made it possible.
