Sushi Workshop

June 4 Sushi Workshop 1

For the first time ever, MHJCA offered an in-person sushi workshop, which was led by Atsuko-san and took place in the Poughkeepsie Galleria Community Room.

With 7 participants, it was nearly a full class and everyone was eager to learn the basics of making uramaki (inside-out rolls).
We kicked off the workshop with a demo, starting with how to prepare the rice with sushi vinegar. Atsuko-san then showed the process of making the roll, including how to use plastic wrap with the bamboo mat, the best way to spread rice onto the nori, and the various types of fillings you can use.

Everyone then had a chance to work at their own stations, which were prepared with rice, nori, avocado, cucumber, crab sticks, and a bamboo rolling mat. By the end, participants had made at least 2 rolls, which they were able to pack up and take home along with the bamboo rolling mat. We also provided a pdf of instructions afterwards in case anyone wants to continue practicing at home.

It was such a pleasure hosting the workshop and hearing people talk and laugh as they all learned a new skill. We’re so proud of how well everyone did!

Also, thank you to Midori-san for being the event photographer for the afternoon!
