Garrison Library Workshop

May 20 “Calligraphy and Origami Workshop”

We were pleased to be invited back to the Desmond-Fish Public Library in Garrison on Saturday, May 20. This time, we held a Calligraphy and Origami workshop as part of their AAPI Heritage Month program. There was a wonderful turnout of 23 people, ranging from elementary-age kids to senior citizens. Some of the library staff even joined in on the fun!

We ran the 2 workshops simultaneously and then switched halfway through so everyone could have a chance to do both activities.

Midori-san and Chikako-san taught calligraphy, starting with the basics. They then helped each person practice writing different characters: “Gogatsu” (May) in kanji, “Satsuki” (a traditional name for the fifth month of the lunar calendar) in hiragana, along with their individual names in katakana. Participants were eager to learn and proudly held up their sheets of paper filled with strong, black strokes of ink.

Atsuko-san, Taeko-san, and Yoko-san led the origami portion by teaching everyone how to fold the popular crane. Although it is one of the most well-known origami creations, there are some steps that can be difficult because of the precise folding required. After some hands-on help, everyone managed to get the hang of it and make their own paper crane.

We also want to thank Toyoo-san for being the event photographer, and our new volunteer Ryuji-san for making the time to come and learn how we run our programs.

Overall, everyone had a wonderful time and it was a lovely way to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month. Thank you to the library for having us back!

A note about our programs:
All of our programs (both for MHJCA members and for institutions like schools and libraries) are made possible by the generosity of our volunteers, who take time out of their busy schedules to share their skills and knowledge. We are always looking for more members to help out at future programs and events, so please let us know if you might be able to contribute in some way.
We also welcome monetary donations year-round to help keep our organization going and offset some running costs. Please contact office@mhjca.org for any questions!

Happy summer!
