Event Description

Ikebana Demonstration at the Ellenville Library

Ikebana Workshop at the Ellenville Library

On the afternoon of Saturday, July 8th, we held an Ikebana workshop at the Ellenville Library.

As this was an introductory workshop, we began by explaining one of the most fundamental compositions of the Ikenobo style, which is made up of the Shin, Soe, and Tai. Once those are in place, flowers can then be added to finish the arrangement. We also emphasized the importance of removing excess branches and leaves to create space within the elements.

Although the library had 10 people sign up, only 4 attended, which was a pity. The library was kind enough to purchase small kenzans for each participant to take home, while MHJCA provided all of the flowers and branches, as well as an English worksheet that explained the basics of Ikebana.

Taeko-san, who is a certified Ikebana instructor, led the workshop, with Chikako-san and Suzumi-san assisting and Yoko-san offering support in English.

Although it was a small group, everyone seemed to be very enthusiastic and immersed in learning.

The various branches were prepared by Suzumi-san and the flowers by Taeko-san. Atsuko-san helped with the setup and clean-up, and also prepared sandwiches for lunch. Toyoo-san was in charge of photography and Wayne helped with unloading and loading all of the supplies.

Thank you to all of our volunteers who helped with this event, as well as the Ellenville Library for this opportunity.
