Event Description

Mochitsuki &Tasting

On Sunday, December 17, we had the final event of 2023: our annual mochitsuki.

This event is always a crowd-favorite and this year was no different. We were so pleased to see a turnout of about 44 people in total, which included both new and longtime members, kids, and friends of members.

We continued our tradition of pounding the mochi in a wooden usu (mortar) and kine (mallet). When each batch was ready, our volunteers tore the mochi into small bite-sized pieces and plated them for guests. Everyone then helped themselves to different sweet and savory toppings. There was sweetened soy sauce and nori, anko (sweetened red bean paste), kinako (sweetened soybean flour), grated daikon, natto (fermented soybeans), kimchi, and pickled cucumbers.

Everyone took home a 3-pack of kirimochi (cut and dried pieces of mochi), which was included with admission this year. In addition, we had many people place an order for an extra 7 pieces of kirimochi. We hope everyone enjoys this nostalgic taste of Japan over the holidays!

It was heartwarming to have so many people from our community come together to eat, talk, and laugh. We hope to continue with this kind of energy and enthusiasm next year!

Many thanks to all of our volunteers who helped make this event possible, from prep work to setting up, serving, and cleaning up.

We wish all of you a joyful holiday season and a happy new year and look forward to seeing you in 2024!
