Lecture of preparation for Departure

April 22: "Preparation for Departure" #2

On Saturday, April 22nd, Mr. Hirano gave a second lecture on how to prepare for one’s passing (or departure) at the Poughkeepsie Galleria Community Room. There were 9 participants, which was more than last time, and everyone’s interest in the topic was evident.

This lecture was mainly about the mental aspects of one’s death. We took a questionnaire that asked whether we believe, don't believe, or don't understand the afterlife. Despite all being in an age group where thinking about our death is not uncommon, the answers were — surprisingly — equally divided among the three.

We were deeply moved by the story taken from the book written by Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara of St. Luke's Hospital, who passed away at the age of 105. It made us think about how to depart in a way that will allow the peacefulness to reflect on our faces.

Some of Mr. Hirano's acquaintances want to try all sorts of life-prolonging treatments. It seems they would like to live for as long as the money lasts. Whether or not that makes one happy is up to the individual.

We heard a lot of useful information, but fundamentally, what feels important is to have a compassionate heart toward others.

These two lectures were given in Japanese, but if there is enough demand, we would like to provide them in English, as well.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Mr. Hirano for hosting these two seminars to help us prepare.

We would also like to thank Ms. Junko for providing us with delicious Inari sushi and Ms. Atsuko for providing us with home-baked anpan to enjoy as refreshments.
